Caherdaniel / Cathair Dónall
Caherdaniel is a small coastal village that is currently seeing a lot of holiday home development. Although the community is spread out over the surrounding area, the hub of the village remains compact on the western side of the main crossroads. There are two pubs here and hot meals can be secured, with seafood being a prominent part of the menu.
A little over 2km to the west of Caherdaniel lies Derrynane House which was built in 1702 and is now on a 120 hectare national park. A huge figure in Irish history, Daniel O'Connell once resided here. During a time when Ireland was governed by the British, O'Connell succesfully campaigned for the lifting of anti-Catholic laws that were empoverishing the country. Derrynane House is open to the public with exhibits relating to the fascinating story of O'Connell.
