Glencar to Glenbeigh
Distance: 17km
Time to Allow: 5 hours
The section between Glencar and Glenbeigh is the shortest on the Kerry Way. Starting from the Climbers Inn, a boreen heads in a south-westerly direction for a kilometre before crossing the River Caragh and swinging around to the north. After briefly following the course of the river, the Kerry Way steers away into a mixed forest plantation of conifers and deciduous trees.
After reaching the environs of Blackstone Bridge, the Kerry Way stays on the road and starts to climb out of the forestry and up onto the lower slopes of Seefin. The trail gradually gets stepper as it goes uphill and after reaching 200m above sea-level, there is a fork on the path. A short-cut takes the walker through Windy Gap and up to a height of around 340m before winding back down to Glenbeigh via a quiet road.
The equally scenic longer route skirts around Seefin in an anti-clockwise direction, giving spectacular views over Lough Caragh and then out onto the Atlantic and Rosbeigh Strand. The Kerry Way approaches Glenbeigh from the main road this time, staying with it for a 2km stretch.
