Kenmare to Killarney
Distance: 25km
Time to Allow: 8 hours
The final days walk from Kenmare to Killarney still holds surprises with some beautiful settings on the Kerry Way. Rising up out of Kenmare on the old Killarney Road, the trail first passes between two minor peaks of Strickeen and Inchimore before the greater exertion of coming off-road and reaching the more respectable height of 330m whilst passing through the gap between Peakeen Mountain and Knockanaguish. The terrain can get quite mucky here, so it is advisable to be well-prepared.
Descending into a quiet valley, the panoramic views are littered with peaks in all directions. Crossing several rivers the Kerry Way eventually slumps to the valley floor and regains a firm gravel path. After passing the fork in the trail (with the Black Valley turn to the left), the Kerry Way sees the final leg of the journey covering some old ground, only this time allowing the views that were previously behind to be to the front.
Crossing into Esknamucky Glen, the Kerry Way finds its route back through Torc Mountain to the north-west and Mangerton Mountain to the south-east and then through the Muckross Estate and finally back to the busy reality of civilisation again at Killarney.
